in the year 1887, I published a little book, which was the first of the series of stories in which I have attempted to show the working of a remarkable mind. The book was entitled A Study in Scarlet , and the principal character in it was Sherlock Holmes , a gentleman who was destined to become one of the most popular figures in English literature.
